My First Whitetail

Post by jrmflintlock » Wed Mar 10, 2010 6:47 pm

First off, this is the best site I have ever been on!! Thanks I have learned a lot fom all of you!!

I just wanted to share!!

I took this monster while hunting in Northeastern New Mexico. We Have mostly Mule deer but there are a few whitetails around. Its always been a dream of mine to take a whitetail with a flintlock. This was the first rifle I built from scratch a few years back and shot it at rendezvous a lot, but had not hunted much with it except for a bunnie or two. Its a .45 and I always was a little worried it was to small a caliber. This last season I told myself I was going to hunt with this rifle and limit myself to less than 40 yards and only perfect shots and push my hunting skills to get there.

On opening morning I was stillhunting up a small drainage when this young buck stood up about 20 yards ahead of me, he was on the other side of some oak brush, but instead of taking off in typical Whitetail fashion, he slowely started walking toward me. I pulled up my longrifle and when he cleared the oak at 15 yards I touched her off!! Worry No Longer !! My little .45 waylayed this buck!

I can't say if it was my hunting skill or just dumb luck but I finally hervested a whitetail with my flintlock!!

Fine deer and great looking rifle. Luck or not ,seems you took advantage of a good situation. Any animal taken at close range with trad gear is special indeed. Congrats.
