Frosty that looks like a great start! - I'm still working on the "Spring Fixer up" around here - some time soon though I'd like to get the pile of file steel out and get on with making a few knives and other stuff! That forge is on the list and so is a little annealing kiln.........maybe if I have a few moments!

Hey Zeek FYI it took all last weekend and I'm still not done with oiling the barn or the porch posts - next week is tractor work if the weather is cooperative - then we are going to bolt solar on the roof...... There's no rest for the weary here!! :D :D

Well looks like the post OJam XII era should begin. Today we had a beautiful day in Kansas. Very little wind, middle 70's for temp. It was a good day for some projects.. Started a pork butt around 8:30 a.m. Then I went to the garden and fired up the tiller, tilling my whole garden up. Still extremely dry but all the leaves and grass trimming I've added is giving the tighter ground a better texture. Broke out some Osage, debarked, split, and sealed three of them. Added the previous 11 sealed staves to the stash. Have three left to work. Should get 7 or 8 more staves out of them. Discovered two nice snakey ones. :applaud: Changed the oil on my hunting buggy. Had supper of smoked pulled pork with canned green beans, jo-jo- potatoes. Watched my Sooners have their worst game of the year. Loaded up Greyden and Dianne in the pickup and drove to the country. Saw about 30 whitetails and one group of turkeys with about 35 birds with about 6 or 7 good toms showing off. BTW while working in the garden, I cut a nice batch of asparagus. I've been watering it to get it started. Other than that, I didn't do a thing. Gonna glue up a BBO for a friend tomorrow. :campfire:

Been busy the last two days.

Yesterday I bought an 18' trailer. I've been borrowing my nephew's whenever i needed to fetch a car or haul some stuff. Been needing one for a while.

After that I put a new ignition switch on my tractor and fixed the wiring to the regulator. Danged mice had a feast on the wiring. I started this last fall and it got put aside through the winter. I wondered how much trouble it would be getting it to start since it sat so long. Didn't need to worry. Two cranks and it started so I moved a little dirt around.

Next, since the wind was the right direction, decided to burn the rest of the trunk and stump of a Maple tree that had been destroyed by the wind last year. Glad I did that yesterday because the wind is howling again today.

I had three things on the agenda this morning. I went down and changed a card in my trail camera and went to see if the buck I found New years Day was still there. All that was left was the head and part of the spine and ribs. I have this same buck on video that was taken not 30 yards from where he died.

Next I was deep in the woods hunting mushrooms and shed antlers when My phone rang. Caller ID said Indiana so I ignored it. A while later I got a notice I had a voicemail so I listened to it. The Indiana call was one of the supervisors from the Emporia, KS office saying they needed someone to check a substation and do some switching. Crap. I don't have enough signal strength to make a call so I head back to the truck and drive to an open area. 45 minutes later I made the call and they had already gotten someone else.
So I headed back to the woods for what resulted in just a nature walk. No sheds or mushrooms found.

Nicely done Pete. I finally got all the Kay County Osage split, treated, and sealed. Gonna be some nice bows in that. I picked up a "found dead", skull and antlers a few days ago. They're in the clean up process right now. I started an osage bow this weekend from some 2013 Bodark. This bow will be unique in its coloration. I've already named it "Motley" because of the color variations on the back. Pics later. It's drizzling rain on my garden. Yea. :applaud:

I started on a bow for a guy here at work. He is 6'4", about 300lb. Huge. This osage is 67", 1 3/4" wide at the fades. After shaping with rasp and scraper I have it to 60 @ 16", just about right. HAH
I should have it to 60# at 28" buy the weekend.
Where are all of the Ojam photos people were taking? :(

Mikee, that one reminds me of Humpty Dumpty... :77: I finished Motley today. Added the wax, handle, floppy rest, new string, beaver balls. I put about 25 arrows through it prior to adding the silencers. I think I could kill something with it. lol :rolf:

I posted all my pictures of OJAM XII on my Facebook page Mike. I tried to share it onto the OJAM page but it wouldn't go.

I'll try again.

On this memorial morning I went to the river with night crawlers and some carp sides. I caught 3 smaller channels in the first 5 minutes. A short time later I landed a keeper channel of six pounds. Another half hour and I hammered a flathead on a slice of a carp side. This one came in at ten pounds. We're having catfish for dinner. :applaud:

Haven't posted to this thread in a bit.... its been a busy spring right now we are waiting out the dogshead fire and suffering through the smoke and heat. We are luckily about 10 miles from the fire line. Unless it continues to grow in our direction...
Perhaps the fire fighters will get it tamed a bit more today and stop the fire's progress..... the area burned was prime turkey hunting and it will take years to regrow..... My sympathy for the families who have lost homes and property. The evacuations are still on going. If the weather cooperates perhaps the fire won't advance any more and folks can start to return and assess the damages......

What a difference the better part of a week makes! The fire is all but out and people are assessing the damages. Old growth forest and a raging wild fire are impressively destructive!
This last week the afternoon thunder showers came and helped to drown the fire (and start a few others around in the mountains). The summer here brings a monsoon season and each afternoon the clouds build over the mountains and then we get late afternoon and evening rains...
the worries now are for flash flooding in the burned areas!

The rains and the cooler afternoon temperatures are good for the garden!

Yes I know it doesn't look as high as it "should" but at 7000ft we get started the end of May :)

Glad the fires are out and hope the storm didn't start more around you.

I could hear a thunderstorm building north of my place when I was getting dressed this morning and had to stop and watch it when I headed to work. The storm is only a couple of miles north of my house and headed toward me. What it lacks in size it makes up for in intensity. Turn up your audio.

Started early and put horn tips on a bamboo, osage straight type longbow. Also did some final fitting on my Osage takedown with the steel/brass sleeves so none of the osage/brass ends would be in a bind when drawing the bow. Sanded it and preparing the back for a couple of Timber rattlers I picked up on a job site in NW Oklahoma while repairing a powerline after a storm.
Will get some photos in a few days.

That is a nice looking bow! How does it shoot? I like the way you spliced the skins and covered the splice with thread. I have some copperheads I want that on a bow I'm working on now. I'm going to see how a brown thread or dark read will look over the splice area.
Are you going to McAlester shoot the first weekend of August?

The saying "If it's got wheels it'll give you problems" really hit me the last few days. Just got done with another bout of playing mechanic this evening.

First, the clutch master cylinder on my daughter's Wrangler went out and I had to replace it.

Next was a trip in my Bravada down Rangeline in Joplin. Stepped on the brakes for some slowing traffic and had full brakes for a couple of seconds then the pedal went almost to the floor  . I wound up with a little braking power so I headed back home. Rangeline traffic on a Saturday is not the place for that to happen. Wound up with a ruptured brake line feeding the back brakes. New brake lines are on order and I could almost buy a new bow for what those cost  .

Then one of the blade spindles came loose on my mower. New grade 8 bolts and nuts and that is going again. Maybe I'll get my yard hay mown one of these days.

Today I had to replace the output shaft speed sensor on my Ram transmission because it was not wanting to shift gears like it should. Not a hard job there, just aggravating.

Just more reminders why I am an electrician and not an auto mechanic.

"If it's got wheels it'll give you problems"

I hear ya! Got a bad squeal in the Subaru when backing to the left, sometimes when backing straight. I couldn't find anything. Took it to the mechanic and he thought it was the lube on the rear calipers, cleaned that up and relubed it, that evening the squeal was back. Backing plate rubbing, I think.

The '89 Ranger is doing okay again, but I need to replace the bed or get a new floor for it as it's rusted through at the front. Then I'll slap a coat of paint on the whole truck in an attempt to keep the road salt off the sheet metal...

Off to Columbus today to get groceries for next week's church camp. The kids eat well!

I decided to cast some new bullets for my Sharps paper cutter. Made a plate full of .54 cal., 450 grain Plains style bullets.

Test fired five of them with about 50 grains of FFFG getting my vernier sight dialed in at a distance of around 50 yards. They will blow a water bottle to smithereens and the one I recovered traveled through a section of electric pole 8" thick. I pulled it out from under a big splinter on the back side.

And they kick like a mule.
