“A week of Hot Florida Hunting”

Post by Les » Fri Oct 09, 2009 7:17 am

Started last night with the arrival of my brother Pete. This morning we will be heading to camp. The forecast for the week is for hot humid weather with little relief. Daytime temps will be in the 90’s with feels like in the hundreds.

At last weigh in we will be heading out with about a 50 lbs of food, 6 cases of water, soda and green tea, 5 bows with plenty of arrows. And then there is the stuff, cameras, stands, targets, climbing stiks, power tools, cell phones, computer, and on and on and on enough to have a garage sale if need be.

Our plan it to take lots of photos and videos while we hunt and have fun together.
One never knows in advance the success of a season; with a bit of patience and luck we may fill a cooler with hog and venison and bring back a bit of a story to share.

Enjoy your week and stay Safe
Les

Best of luck to ya Les, and hope you have a great time!

Stay out of the sun and try to stay cool, and remember to pick a spot.

Very very hot. On stand as I type. Feels like 100. Very little game at all and none within recurve range for me. Had 2 does buck hog and 2 sandcraines out at 30 yards together this am. Some good video to come

GW thanks for the anatomy lesson. Pete and I have both reviewed it. You should post that.
Pete and I are back for the night do do some errands and are heading back out is about an hour. Thought I would share this hunt from Wed morning. Due to length it is in three parts. No editing about 20 min all together...

Pete and I are in a tree house like platform. I am standing in far back corner with camera Pete is the shooter and is in front of me to the right. Camera zoom distorts visual distances. The distance to the feeder is about 28 yards for perspective. We are hunting with Recurve bows built by Pete.

How come no shot? Something in the way that we can't see or is it farther than it looks in the video?

Distance and blockage. The guy walking the road was final straw.
This am the 7 point is teasing Pete. We have an 8 point rule and this deer must know it. I have almost taken by mistake. This is third time he has been under Pete at less then 10 yards.
Pete said he also had 4-5 lb rabbit but he stayed a safe 30 yards.

I awoke not feeling well so sitting am out.

GW. Pete got to sit and shoot from Pine stand hog platform this am. You seem to bee one the money re their sight. I was in tree stand and got video of the hunt. Will post once back home. I just had a shot at hog. Perfect setup and hit branch. Right after that good size bear came in. Got some nice vid of him.

Here is an edited version of Petes Pig Platform hunt. This is the first time in use and we did discover some tiny hunter tweaking was needed.
Notice Petes position on the platform and the relationship of the bows lower limb and his left boot.

After the fact Pete said it was the most exciting hunt he had done on the lease. Kind of up close and personal... If first you don't succeed try try again. So the following morning Pete returned..solo. I went to another stand where I had been playing cat and mouse with some does.

Next Morning.

Pete ,Hog and Bow. The bow is self made by Pete. The hog traveled about 75 yards and left nice traces of blood the entire way. We only had a minute of difficulty trying to figure out were it broke out of a large palmetto cluster.

Had 3 different hunts at same location interrupted by this guy. Thought you might enjoy. first time was kind of cool. second time he chased this hog. The 3rd time was the worst. I was watching a tall 10 point coming into the feeder through binocs when he froze and I startled from a large sound from below.

This video is from second hunt. Was very windy and the creaking sound is the stand itself.

When are they gonna make those really big black hogs legal? Seems like you had more shot opps with those than deer and small hogs!
