WOW, this has been up awhile with no input, come on guys and gals, someones gotta have some advice for me, please?

I am wondering if someone could please be so kind to share some easy and affordable plans on how to build a simple coal forge for a rookie.

I have been all over the internet and see about a billion different designs, and beign a rookie I have no clue what ones are actually worth looking at, let alone building.

I would like to try my hand at makeing a knife and or a hawk sometime, at least thats my idea, what turns out might not be quite that great at first

A little help from our expert guru's would sure be appriciated.

Thanks alot,

Frosty

Frosty, I know it's been awhile on this post but if you happen to read this post try the brake drum method using anything for an air inlet that won't melt and a hairdryer for a bellows. There's lots of adjustments to be made to make it right for your specific application but it's a pretty cheap starter forge.

I've been thinking about making a forge out of an old cast iron dutch oven by drilling holes in the bottom for the air inlet. The problem is I'd hate to go to hell for drilling holes in a dutch oven. I'm sure there are folks that would consider such a mortal sin. But it would work and I can come up with an oven easier than a brake drum.

Zeek,

If you get one of the new Lodge dutch ovens which hasn't been polished inside like they used to be, I am sure you would be forgiven!

Zeek,
do you have a junkyard close? or and auto repair - worn out drums are basic trash for the auto shop..... :D :D

Thanks fellas, sure appreciate all your advice. Almost forgot about this old post of mine, thanks for refreshing my memory.
Zeek, I hear you brother, I see dutch ovens on Craigslist or at yard sales all the time, way more often than I run across used break drums.
That's a very good idea that I'll have to keep in mind.
As for break drums, I wonder why I never considered asking an old coworker who now has his own auto shop. I must be getting silly in the head
