Cracks in the finish, how to repair?

Postby mihuntr » Tue Jun 11, 2013 6:49 pm

A friend just gave me a Bear Super Kodiak and the finish has cracks in it. He was shooting the bow last year without any problems. I would like to refinish the bow and I wondered if these look like they would sand out. I am in the process of refinishing a Darton Ranger and it's coming along great, but the finish was just scuffed up. Could I get a little advice on what to do it would be greatly appreciated!

If it were me, I'd hang it on the wall !! Those are not stress fractures, That is glass failure. Across the limb like that will blow up, the cracks that run along the limbs are repairable and can br restored.

whew you haven't put a string on that I hope.......... Danger man that may be a face full even if it works for a while! I think Greywolf's advice is very good, even IF I know how to hide those tiny stress cracks....... the problem is the resin has begun to crystallize and is "dried out" there is no way to adequately rejuvenate the resin deeply enough to rehabilitate the laminate....... so please be safe

I assume from what he said in another post it was just finish fractures, Kinda hard to tell from a picture and being able to run a fingernail along the cracks to tell while holding onto it.
I think he sanded the finish off and finished the bow again. Maybe it was a varnish, I've seen varnish crack like that in even patterns like that. I erred on the side of safety with my decision.

Hope he posts a picture of the new finish of the bow.
When I redo a bow with lineal fractures, I use a single cut checkering tool, then fill the new crack, sand to smooth and do a all cracks like that and finish the limb.

Either way glad it worked out well.
