2016 OSS bow trade

Post by Poggins » Fri Oct 09, 2015 9:37 pm

Figured I'd get this started .
I've received my specs for the bow build and after getting out of the woods this morning I chanced a ring on an Osage stave , layed the bow out and cut it out , I could probably get it to a short string in a short time with a belt sander .
I'm still going to get a couple more started for backups just in case something goes south when I put some heat and bends in it . I'll get some pics as soon as I can .

This is going to be another fun bow trade .

I got my stats and found a stave that will work. Chased a ring, laid it out, roughed it out and knocked off some sharp edges. I figured I could get 28" out of a 54" tip to tip Osage selfbow. I'll have real skinny tips, and carry an inch and a half of limb to within 7 inches of the tips. Give the tips a little flip and it should really launch an arrow. Figured everyone needs a short bow to shoot out of tight spots and blinds. Here's a sneak preview.

With these hot days, I've decided to work on the bow I'm building for one of my Buddies.
I've come a ways since the above pics. Tips are flipped, short string on it. Still a few pounds to come off and a couple of inches to add to the draw. Here's a pic of it braced and then one at 24" of draw. Top limb is on the right. Couple of whoopty dos on the bottom limb. Sure hope my buddies in the Trade think enough of this to hope I've got their specs. However, if your drawlength is 29 or 30 inches, forget it!! This little rascal is 53" nock to nock. Brace height right now is top limb at 5 3/4 and the bottom is 5 1/2 inches.

Mine's done. Finished with finish and wax today, added leather strike plate, floppy and handle this afternoon. Here's a pic of the two finished limbs and the specs. The bow is 53" nock to nock.

I got me a good log picked out today, plenty of reflex.... :rolf:  Not really I think I'll save that one for when I am in the presence of experts. I have a nice straight piece of mulberry shaping up nicely for my trade bow.

Thanks Billy, this is the only one I've made but it is a shooting son of a gun! I was trying to come up with a good design for mulberry and still end up with a faster bow.

Why rush. You have until Feb 6. You could finish up that Morning and rub some grease on the bow for finish.

I just finished up my trade bow. I know, I know... I rushed and got it done with a whole 6 days left. Usually I'm a little better at procrastinating but I just got into a rhythm... Lol. Anyways, it is Kentucky coffee bean and 63" long ntn. That's all I'm going to say just to give you guys some excitement. I'm excited for next weekend! See you guys there!!
Thanks!

Yes I know it's getting down to the wire for this bow trade but I've got my trade bow shooting , hit my specks also , still have some finish work and make a slightly shorter string , made two strings and still ended up short but the second fit but with a brace height of just under 7" , was hoping it would stretch a little .

We'll got my trade bow built, hit specs, feeling good and thought I was done except finishing touches this past weekend. Shooting it a bit and noticed a crack forming on the fade just above the grip.

So I broke out the super glue and soaked some sinew. Let's hope she holds.

Did a wax finish.

Still needs a rest and a handle.

Decided today I would go ahead and get the trade bow done. I did some Meticulous Meditation last night while talking with my friend the wild turkey trying to decide what type of grip I wanted to try on the bow.
Got the documentation on the bow done and now I'm cutting out some exotic leather.
Has 18 growth rings per inch. It is a scorcher. Whoever gets it will have to put some fire proof coating on their feathers.
Should be complete by the time I drop it on the table at the banquet. :archer2:
Mikee.

Done- got the grip on the right side and fur silencers, not that it needs them. Waxed up for the banquet.

So we got home from the banquet a little after midnight. Couldn't stand it, had to go outside and shoot my trade bow made by Chris Coffman. :archer2: "Little Dog Leg" is quick, quiet, and shoots right where I'm looking! Excellent job Chris! :77: I can't wait to make meat with this thing! Glad we both decided to get in on the bow trade. Thank you my friend

Great time and Great fellowship at the OSS Annual Banquet. Great Bow Trade, many beautiful bows went to new homes. I received the one that my Buddy Billy made. Haven't shot it yet as we just got home, but I know it's gonna shoot great. C. R. did a superb job of helping us with our auction and raffle and he also made some beautiful arrows . Thanks Buddy.
I so glad that everyone got to meet Monte Browning and his wife Annie, wonderful people. Monte and I had met years ago at a KBA Convention. Nothing has changed, he's still a down to earth, Good man that has a lot to offer in the way of hunting and living. Thanks to Monte for coming out. I've heard nothing by Great Reviews by all who were there.
Now it's on to OJam XII. :applaud:
