Virtual Check Station- Check your game here.

Post by docmann » Sat Oct 03, 2015 5:00 am

Let's see just how much we've improved from last year.
Check in that deer, turkey, hog, bear, etc. right here. Or, just let us know how the day went. Photos are encouraged but not a requirement at the Virtual Check Station.

First day afield this season.
As I'm sure you've all experienced, I found myself begging for a little daylight this morning somewhere around 06:45 listening to the light footsteps just off to my left. As (bad) luck would have it, the cloud cover only extended the wait. Finally, somewhere around 07:00 three small does finally showed themselves--a far cry from the two 8-pointers I'd seen on my game cam earlier in the week. Passed them up and called it a morning somewhere around 10:00. Darn, sure thought he'd be in my neighborhood this morning.
Checked the cam photos from this morning only to find one of the two local big boys was about 8 yards from me this morning for about 3 minutes. Oh well, at least he takes a nice photo. Get 'em next time!
I explained the scenario to my wife who thought for just a moment then replied, "don't they make those glasses that allow you to see in the dark?, and couldn't you hunt with those?"
Makes sense to me.

Well, shot me a small buck! I probably should have practiced those 6 yard shots from 15 feet up but I hit it and I will post pics later if I can track it down. It was a little farther back then I would like and the blood looks like kidney but there is a ton of it so we are going to look in an hour or so and see if I can find it. I can't remember who made me this bow but I think I will keep it :rolf: (Mike Magee  )

Good luck on tracking your deer. Take your time and look at the ground and plants about 24" off of the ground. I'm sure you will find it.
Nice bow.

Oh, I found him alright! I kinda wish I didn't because we had to carry him straight up this bank. You will see why I say that when you look at the pics Lol. He went about 150 yards or so and probably only took him 30 minutes or less to expire. It was a pretty bad shot but I think I got some arteries or something because he was gushing blood. Not the smallest or we have seen on camera but not a monster by any means. About a 4 yard shot after measuring it. Now check out where we found this guy!

Congrats Easton, I've heard of shooting fish in a barrel but bucks in a tub that's different did Dad go swimming for him. See if you would have been out with docmann that water would have been dry. Location is everything. Alex

Thank goodness, there for a bit, I thought you'd missed and the deer couldn't swim and drowned in the river.....lol. Nice recovery. Straight down isn't a great shot, You've gotta have some poundage to poke a hole out the bottom end. Congrats! Your first buck with one of your bows?

Last year I cheated and got a doe with the compound, my first with archery equipment. I finally got this buck which is a first for a selfbow. I was pretty excited and it went clean through just a little back from where I would like. It was bleeding real good and looked like it fell multiple times through the last 50 yards. Now I just have to get me some more deer!
Thanks!

Ralph , if you want to experience what it's like to stalk a group of pigs try letting a group of 20 or so turkeys get just out of bow range then try ang stalk them , they are about the same , there is always one or two with their heads up , any movement and they are gone , plus you have to play the wind , I'll get one pretty soon .

Had 16 Toms under me this morning. Began drawing my arrow at about 1 cm every 5 seconds. About half drawn, the birds were showing nothing but tail lights. Too darn many eyes probing the landscape to even get an arrow half drawn! (For the record, these birds are just passing through and are NOT in the least interestef in my deer feed).
To top it off, I have two dandy little 8-pts toying with me. They take nice portraits for the game cam, but only on the days I'm not in the picture!
That's OK. If I don't take game soon, me and my huntin' partner, Mr. STIHL , are going to thin out some of this nice straight Bois d'arc and then I'll have a real trophy!

In the words of Yogi Berra, "It's like déjà vu all over again"!
The above is a nice little 4-pt that I managed to miss last night. If you'll look closely, you'll notice my yellow arrow parting the hair just over the buck's shoulders.
This morning, however, a different story. I put an arrow in him just after dawn. Nice blood trail for about 100 yards, but it ultimately played out. Worked the woods back and forth three times but no deer. Could have used my OSS bear-hunting partners and maybe Dave too.
Think I'll start to work on my auction items for this year's get together. Hope some of the rest of you are flinging some arrows.
