Hogs at the Spike Box Ranch

Postby TradRag » Thu Feb 23, 2012 5:22 pm

We had a great trip down to the Spike Box Ranch in Texas. Despite the hunting manager informing us the hog count was down due to the hot summer drought, no breeding during the heat, we were in hogs every day. It was very exciting and rewarding as we would get into hogs using the spot and stalk approach. I had an absolute blast.

I knew things were going to be good as soon as I arrived and saw the cooler.

After a good meal and some restless sleep we woke to a whiteout. We had about 1.5-2" or snow..in TEXAS! Here is the first trophy found by Kevin Bahr.

Later that afternoon I had found a hog wallow that looked like it was receiving a lot of hog traffic so I hung a game cam.

Shorty after that I ran into my second encounter for the day. A bedded boar with two sows. I was able to creep within 12 yards of him and the only shot I had was a head on shot. I tried to side step to a hole that offered me a good quartering to shot. The boar heard me and tore out! I was amazed at how fast they can move. We all came back at dark with close encounters and good stories.

The next morning I took a couple guys by the wallow and one choose to sit and wait. Well,... it paid off! an hour later he had a hog down.

Throughout the week we had many encounters and many arrows loosed. Here is one from PBS member Kevin Bahr...

His brother Chris had a little different hunting style..

We used this as the 'lunch time' stand.

Was a great week with great fellowship and memories and I can't wait to get back next year. Being my first hog hunt the lessons learned were priceless and extremely fun. I think this is going to be addictive.

Bryan it was a pleasure sharing camp with you. It seems you have a wealth of information about hunting elk that I would like to catch up on. I hope we can share camp again next year, I love hunting hogs.

I had a great time on the hunt too. Great seeing my friends, Dave Sisamis(dirtybird), his brother Scott, and Mike Gerardi. Nice to finally meet some of the PBS guys as well. I saw hogs most of the times that I hit the woods even though the numbers were down from the drought/record heat from the previous summer. The hogs that I did see were very large hogs. I wasn't luck enough to bring home the bacon from spike box, but I did manage to shoot a 150# sow a couple of days after I got back from Texas. Looking forward to another crack at the spike box hogs, though. I learned one thing on this hunt. At least one Abowyer Brown Bear broadhead wasn't up to the challenge of a cow scapula. Not even with a straight on shot out of a relatively light bow(55#). I was a little chagrined when my buddy split the thick part of the scapula with his ACE 2 blade. Live and learn.

I always have fun in hunting "camp" in Texas. It was great to share a camp with everyone there, always good to spend time with my own brother, Chris and the Sisamis brothers. Finally got to spend some time with Bryan as well, not to mention my good friends and mentors Mark Wang and Jeff Noland from Illinoize. Pat, it was great to meet you and Mike. Congratulations on your Okie hog! Good eating right there. I look forward to your tales of stalking big beasts in Australia! Hope you and Mike decide to join PBS. We are always looking for and needing more good, ethical bowhunters. You guys definitely fit the description.

Yes it was nice to see everyone. I would like to make hog hunting an annual event. They are so fun to hunt. The hunt was tough for me this year not having an opportunity but I will be back non the less. It was also nice to meet Bryan Bolding and Jeff Noland. Great guys.

Wow, Bryan I would say that was a honey hole. There is a whole lot of pork in those pics. You and I will have better luck next year.

While in pursuit of hogs Pat and I were in a new spot that did not have alot of fresh sign. We decided to head back to the area we had seen some pigs and were doing some stumping on our way. I found a cow scapula and decided to test my ACE 160grn broadhead.

Image

This pic was the second shot. The first shot in the thin part the arrow passed through. When I picked the shaft up the tip had slightly curled. I pulled out my file and took it down some. The point was more rounded and I sharpend the head back up. This was what it looked like after it split the thick part.

Bow was a Tall Tines 65@28. Arrow set up was Heratige 350 with 255 upfront. 160 grn head and 100 grn steel insert. The head was about 155grns after sharpining.
