Smoothbore Deer

Postby hanshi » Sat Jan 07, 2012 6:53 pm

Yesterday morning found me in the woods with my fine TVM .62 flint EA smoothie. Around 8:00AM a big doe came crashing through the trees toward me at a slight angle that would put her some 20 yds to my left. She was flat out running and I tried to whistle and make her stop but couldn't make a whistle. Calculating lead i threw the gun to my shoulder and fired in one motion. The ground was jerked out from under her feet and she fell right where she was hit. She was still breathing so I reloaded quickly and administered a coup de grace. My first deer with a smoothbore. To say I was impressed with the effect from using a .600" lead ball is an understatement

I recollect Robert Ruark writing about throwing up a double-barreled rifle like it was a shotgun and killing a tiger which was intent on having him for lunch. The doe probably wasn't quite that fierce but it sounds like your actions were about the same. Great shot, I'm impressed! Nice looking deer and gun. Congratulations!

A flintlock smoothbore will be my next rifle. Love the lines of that one. Nice doe too.

It's an EA fowler from TVM that I had built more than 2 years ago. though I'll never quit rifles, It's seeing more and more use. One could get along nicely with just this one gun.
