Any one do any carving?

Post by Greywolf » Sun Sep 09, 2012 1:15 pm

Seems like it got quiet in here, I know every one is preparing for the up coming season. Just thought I'd ask.
Does any one do any carving? I just got a Foredome carver and going to do some playing around with bone carvings and see if I can make a few things I'd like to have,
Like a bone fish hook and maybe one out of Koa and other Hawaiian native woods. I've even done a few other drawing and I said to myself.
Self, if you drew it you can carve it.....Well a huge argument broke out and the wife almost had me committed, but we talked her out of it. :applaud:

Just wondering, if ya have post up some of the things you have done.

I carved a girls name in a tree once. It was so long ago, I can't remember where the tree is to get a picture. Does that count, Mark? :)

Would love to get into doing wood carving. Just too many other hobbies. Would really love to do gun stock carving, but I like iron mounted muzzleloaders.

My brother and a cousin got into wood carving but just use knives. I never got into carving much.

About the only carving I do is on my wood lathe. These are some I made out of Osage for the OSS banquet last year.

I've got a few made for the OSS banquet raffle and auction next Feb. Being the scrounger that I am, I hauled home some wood skids that some of our voltage regulators were shipped on. At first I thought they were White Oak but when I planed the wood down I discovered I had a bunch of Box Elder. It is easy to work and turned out some nice call pots and strikers.

Knowledge test:

What tree species does Box Elder belong to?

Box Elder belongs to the acer family of woody plants hence it is a maple. There was a huge Box Elder tree in my grandparent's back yard and when we were kids we kept the bark worn slick from climbing it. Sadly, the last time I was in that neighborhood and drove past the old tree was gone; in the words of Robert Frost, "nothing gold can stay".

Zeek wins the...er....I guess there wasn't a prize.

The first piece of Box Elder I got was from my gt-grandpa's barn that was built in 1904. It was a board I got from one of the grain cribs and was 3/4" X 22"wide. I had never seen or worked that type of wood before and did a lot of research before I found out what it was. Finding a Box Elder tree now that would yield a board that wide is a hard thing to do.

I think that Box Elder is the only Maple that drops seeds in the fall. We have a few Box Elders in our river bottom timber and I watch the little propellers flutter through the woods when I hunt deer.

I wish I had a penny for everyone of those little propellers I cleaned out of my grandparent's gutters when I was a kid; I'd go on a bow hunting safari someplace exotic. I'd give anything for a few pieces of that old tree to have made into pens or other keepsakes for my self, my siblings and my cousins.

I hear ya Zeek. My gutters look like a small forest in the spring from just two red maples I have in my yard.
