Re: 2015 Buck

Then, of course, I waited the traditional 3 minutes before following up on the shot. When you center punch a decent buck, you know he's dead and just doesn't realize it. I'd highly recommend waiting a bit longer that three minutes, but I was having a severe adrenalin attack and shaking like a leaf, ...

Re: 2015 Buck

My Buddy David from Arcadia and I were discussing that very thing. Not sure who it was, but at least they didn't bust his rack up. Pulled a chip today from the camera where I shot him. I have a picture of him about 20 seconds prior to shooting him. Here's the dialogue: Mr. George Jones, I'd like you...

Re: What did you do today 2015

Spent the afternoon boning out a big ole Kansas Whitetail. Lot of meat on that dude. Going to go get some trim for the burger. Will package burger, steaks, and roasts tomorrow. Break out the tenderizer for Ms. Di. lol I tired right now. Back hurts, knees hurt. Think I'll shoot a yearling next year. ...

Re: A painful reminder

Just a bit of math. Sound travels right at 1200 fps. Let's say an arrow out of your selfbow travels 160 fps. A deer at 20 yards. When you release the string that sound gets to the deer in .05 or five hundredths of a second and his reaction starts. Your arrow is traversing the distance in .375 second...

2015 Buck

I've been watching a buck on my place all year and finally had the chance for a shot on Dec 10th. The last nice buck I killed was on Dec 10th of 2011. I have pictures of him from velvet to the day before I killed him. Pics are from August, September, October, November, and December. Last pic is his ...

Dennis, if you look closely, you can see the size of the bare spot on the 2nd buck's back. No hair there at all. I've seen it up close on the hoof. Looks like you shaved that spot.

Two Pics

Here's two pics of young 8 pointers. One shows you what the word "Even" means when talking about racks. The other is a dark big bodied deer with a bare spot on his back. Question is, what do you think caused the bare spot. It's about the size of your palm. I've had both bucks within 6 or 7 yards of ...

Re: Old Fence Post

Left limb in the pic. About mid point, right after some knots, there's a flat spot for about 8 inches or so. Check it out and let us know. Pics don't always tell the whole story. But there's definitely a great bow there.

I hope someone can help you out here. I have forms for making R/D composite bows...BBOs. I have a caul for putting the reflex into a selfbow. If no one helps you out here, I'll measure up something of mine and try to help you out. :campfire:

Mine's done. Finished with finish and wax today, added leather strike plate, floppy and handle this afternoon. Here's a pic of the two finished limbs and the specs. The bow is 53" nock to nock.

Re: 2016 OSS bow trade

With these hot days, I've decided to work on the bow I'm building for one of my Buddies. I've come a ways since the above pics. Tips are flipped, short string on it. Still a few pounds to come off and a couple of inches to add to the draw. Here's a pic of it braced and then one at 24" of draw. Top l...

Re: When to heat and adjust a stave/bow?

Zeke, it sounds like you've removed enough wood to reshape your limb now. I always get most of the wood removed before flipping tips or untwisting or moving side to side. Just go slow and don't get it too hot. Reflex is the limb tip moving away from you and deflex is the one moving toward the archer...

Leslie, you can sure see the genetics in those antlers. Width, brow tines, curvature of main beams. There some relations going on there.

Re: 2016 OSS bow trade

I got my stats and found a stave that will work. Chased a ring, laid it out, roughed it out and knocked off some sharp edges. I figured I could get 28" out of a 54" tip to tip Osage selfbow. I'll have real skinny tips, and carry an inch and a half of limb to within 7 inches of the tips. Give the tip...

Re: Virtual Check Station- Check your game here.

Thank goodness, there for a bit, I thought you'd missed and the deer couldn't swim and drowned in the river.....lol. Nice recovery. Straight down isn't a great shot, You've gotta have some poundage to poke a hole out the bottom end. Congrats! Your first buck with one of your bows?
