Re: Cotton Volrath
I just found this thread about Cotton, I knew of his passing. I knew him well enough to call him a friend, he was a man of outstanding character. I got a letter from Bea last summer. She wrote, "We still have the picture of when you and the fellows canoed the lake up here"...she was talking about La...

I usually carry both a bow and my Fowler, then the situation determines which I use.

He lives again
The Taxidermist finely finished my Gobbler from last spring. He looks as good as he did in real life. I'll be looking for his big brother later this month.

Re: Turkey Season/Gun Choice
The 20013 season is just around the corner. I hope it's not too late to post my success from the 2012 season. This big Tom was taken the first day of the season last spring. He was as big as my 20011 gobbler, weighing in at 25# with a 11" beard and spurs that totaled just under 3" The gun used was a...

Re: Turkey Season/Gun Choice
I've killed a number of turkeys over the years, both with a longbow and a flintlock smoothbore. I took a really nice bird last spring with my 12ga fowler. He weighed 27# with a very heavy 11" beard. The spurs were 1 9/16 and 1 7/16. He took 1st place in a contest with over 50 other entries with mode...

Turkey sucess...finely!
After two weeks of trying to get a Tom turkey in front of my flintlock fowler, it finely happened. Fowl weather hampered efforts for 14 days. Rain, snow, wind and hail made getting close to a bird almost impossible. Finely Mother Nature let up and gave us a decent warm and sunny day and late in the d...

Re: Turkey shot
If you buy a big bag now you'll be glad you did later on because it's gonna get pricier and harder to get as time goes on....Thanks guys. I can get it local in a big bag. Just did not want to drop $50-100. Looks like Track has smaller amounts but is out of #6 as well

Ready for turkeys
I just got this early rustic shooting bag from Chuck Burrows of Wild Rose Trading, just in time for turkey season which opens next week. My 12ga. Fowler on the left has accounted for many gobblers over the years.

Re: Silly Question.... Neck Knives
A neck knife is a good excuse to carry another knife.. It's also very handy having a blade that is so easily accessible during those many times throughout the day when you need a cutting tool. Belt knives are fine when your hunt turns successful and pocket folders are indispensable but for eas...

Re: A new Shrew Skinner
Sheaths are in the works, should have some in a week or so. Arwin, those old Bear Razorheads will do the job. I've taken a bunch of deer with them. You'll find that they usually make a nice X going in an a __ coming out. The thin razor insert was designed to collapse on contact with rib bones. No, t...

Flintlock Gobbler
The first morning of the season this year, this big Tom walked into my decoys. I didn't even have my 12 ga flintlock Fowler primed yet. My calls were still in my bag. It happened so fast and was over so quick that I didn't even have time to get excited. The biggest bird I've killed to date...26lb's ...

Long barrel double
I went to a local gun show today and came home with an original SXS double. I think it's a 14ga. The interesting thing about it is the length of the barrels..36.5" Along with it came a can of large musket caps. Here it is along side of my other SXS 12ga that has 32" barrels. I'm wondering if those l...

I'm thinkin 40-45gr's of 3FG. It's a pretty light gun and with a ball she'll probably buck pretty good. It's gonna rain here for the next couple days so I won't be tryin her out till the first of the week. I'll make a report when I do.

Companion gun
Early this winter I got a .62 smoothbore from Jackie Brown. It has a 30" barrel which is on the short side for a fowler. Today the companion piece that I ordered from Jackie came. A pretty little .62 smoothbore pistol that I'll be able to tuck in my belt or sash as a backup. http://www.shrewbows.com...

Re: WOOL
I've posted this before, but my issue with wool is the odor. I can wash fleece one time in scentless detergent, then dry it outside on the line and it only smells like fresh air. I don't disagree with you Tom but that reminds me of a story that happened several years ago in Bob Garners camp in the ...
