Re: Anyone still here??

A flint shooter here tho I have an atl-ago, a stick bow, a recurve and one of those things with training wheels. Archery season here is the month of October but still too warm and too many mosquitoes in Texas hill country for me so gun season and a flintlock that’s my choice.

Re: Alternatives to flint?

I’ve been successful using chert (Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri) though I usually use black English flint. Im not a geologist so I’m unable to provide any technical information or naturally occurring locations on the island continent.
Good luck

Re: My favorite

Looking good. I like the iron mounted flint long guns. My favorite is a .40 SMR. Did a hunting gun w Renegade stock, .54 GM 1:70 twist barrel, L&R RPL lock. Now upgrading a contemporary.36 full stock pop gun to flint. It has brass tg, but plate and nose cap --- for now.

Re: Hunting load for 54

Barrel twist, length and height of the front sight above centerline of bore comes into play. My GM barrel is 1:72 twist it starts grouping good w 90 gr Goex FFg .535 cast ball and .018 patch w TOW MINK oil. Works good w 120 gr too. Here's where height of the sight and barrel length comes in. If hunt...

2 rigs, one for .40 and one for .54. My horns are attached to the bag strap right side cause I. Right handed. They are carried high - a little above the top of the bag. One thing to grab and put on. I'm sure the were carried in every possible arrangement tho some more prevalent than the others - sep...

Yes more definition is needed. Model and a pic of the area where the part goes. He could have a traditional rifle and be using the wrong name for a nipple and nipple wrench.

Re: hunting season coming up

Been too hot in Texas to do more than think about bow hunting. Rain this weekend then less hot. General gun season opens Nov 7. May not get a chance to go before end of bow season. That's OK cause the .54 flinter is ready and may still bow hunt anyway.

.54 barrel, .36 and .44 Colt style revolvers SOLD

Selling a few things to finance another BP gun. I bought this barrel for a project that never got off the parking lot. It is 1" across the flats and 44" long with deep rifling 1/66 twist. The barrel has not been cut for a breech plug and has deep square bottom rifling. One end (Muzzle?) is stamped 6...

Those that are 5 gr low in weight are sure to have an air pocket (void) and that is guaranteed not to be centered on the axis of rotation.

Re: Photos Of CVA/Deer Creek Rifle Problem for Captchee

I have one flinter that uses a 3/8-24 touch hole on a 7/8 barrel. Not knowing what size that adapter is or what size the barrel is just saying to take a look at that possibility. Another possible is to use a helicol. My Hawken hammer was not striking the nipple square. We both heated and bent the ha...

Re: Long Rifle or 2 shorties ?

Glad you decided on the long rifle. That CM stock shouldn't be chopped up IMO. I don't see much use for a 21" .45 and two would ... well no need to go further. A carbine or canoe gun in .54 or larger (62?)would make sense especially in 24". As far as a lock, A Jim Chambers Late Ketland should be per...

Thanks for bringing this thread to the top. I joined after all the 2010 posts but really enjoyed looking thru all of the pics. Heck I may even go to the trouble of learning how to post pics. Seems every website is different and I'm just a low tech redneck.

I expect some variation but like you those seem like a lot. Will run some over the chronograph in the next couple of weeks. Don't have a .58 except the musket but will bang a .50 and .40. Maybe even a .54.
